Wood is used for the basic frame. Pine or some other softwood is suitable, but a satisfactory and cheaper alternative is 16mm plywood. As with most manufactured materials, there are different grades of plywood and you should choose a high quality type, such as Finnish birch, which takes a very good painted finish on both surfaces.
If you trawl through the enormous array of different styles that the various manufacturers, you may notice that most armchairs seem to lack in originality. The problem with many designers is they seem to forget people have to sit in the chairs and it's the act of sitting that inspires the design of the chair... not the other way around. It's a wonder more people don't have comfortable seating in their bedrooms for this very scenario.
