We can be ever so rigid in our thinking at times. Armchairs and sofas go in the living room, don't they? That's where they've always gone. That's where we relax in front of the TV, open Christmas presents, and have lazy evening takeaways when we can't muster the energy to set up the dining room. It's where we entertain and relax.
One answer to the problem, which has been developed over the last few years, is furniture which can easily and quickly be stowed away when not in use. Nowadays it is possible to buy inflatable chairs, and more conventional chairs which can be assembled or dismantled in a matter of seconds. It is on this latter principle that the knock-down chair has been designed.
A vacant space under a set of stairs can easily be transformed into a reading area with the addition of an armchair, and little else. It's a simple, cost-effective change - no shelving, carpeting and so on necessary. You just need to fit in with the colour scheme of your hall.
Two slots corresponding to those cut in the top edges of the side panels are made in the back panel. They are the same length 165mm. and are located 64mm. from, and parallel to, the short sides.
A continuing trend in modern furniture design has been the sacrificing of comfort for economy and space. While agreeing that those huge Victorian armchairs were really luxurious, designers today would argue that they would be very much out of place in a modern house, as well as being inordinately expensive. So, designers concentrate on producing chairs which can easily be mass produced and which fit contemporary tastes. Unfortunately of course, the result of such thinking is that most chairs manufactured now tend to merely ornament a room without being very comfortable.
A great rule of thumb is the fact that the bigger your space, the 'heavier' your armchair could be (and the other way round). A study covered with walls of book shelves and wood panels can accommodate a heavy, dominating chair. Look at armchairs for sale who have rich detailing and more classic design. For a more modern space, especially a smaller space, look for free standing legs and slimmer arm rests, and straight, clean lines.
