Historians say that the Egyptians were the first who used accent chair furniture with hieroglyphics to decorate their homes. They considered it as a luxury and a status symbol. That is still a concept that is used today with expensive and exquisitely designed chairs that grace grander homes. The Greeks and Romans eventually caught up with the trend of using chairs as a piece of furniture to relax in and the fad spread throughout other ancient civilizations around the globe like Asia and Western Europe. As accent chair furniture spread across different cultures, the designs evolved and took a variety of shapes, motifs and sizes.
Before you go out and purchase a chair, you must decide on a style, color palate, size and where you will place it. A tiny chair in a huge space can seem lost. Massive chairs in an already overcrowded room will just add to the feeling of clutter.
Now think about your style. Are you more of a casual person, or do you prefer a more formal design? Do you like things that are contemporary, or more traditional? What about size? Accent chairs come in all sizes and shapes, and if your current furniture collection is thin and delicate, a substantial piece of thick, dark wood and leather with nickel studs is going to look just a tad bit out of place.
For home library the ideal traditional furniture is ottoman chair with high upholstered backs and leather finish. They have an elegant look which suits well the serious atmosphere of library. They provide comfort to the reader and as these chairs are generally expensive it brings a certain class to the room and its owner.
For plain or downright dull living rooms or bedrooms, the use of a bold pattern can be invigorating to the room's atmosphere. Chairs that make use of contrasting colors and bold lines can be used without the fear of having them look out of place, and that's because the whole point is to introduce something different into the room as a breath of fresh air. The idea is to break up the monotony of a single color scheme or stale pattern with something that's totally novel, yet somehow fits.
Keep in mind that you don't need to add a large number of accent chairs inside a room to make it stand out, especially if the room is small. Often times, a single chair is sufficient. Avoid a cluttered look as much as possible and go for something more simple and elegant, if you wish. Also, you should make sure that you position the accent chair in such a way that the sitter can easily exit the room. Some people opt for creating a special place just for positioning the accent furniture. Most people that do this are avid readers though.
